Cross State Ride
Frequently Asked Questions

Basic information for the First Timer joining the John Wayne Wagons and Riders Cross State Ride

Who can Participate?
The ride is open to everyone. Most participants are either horseback riders or teamsters. We also welcome biking/cycling participants. It is an excellent wagon trail, with gentle grades and a firm roadbed. You choose how many days you would like to be on the trail! 2, 7, 14 days or all 18 days! It’s entirely up to you!
What do I need?
You must care for yourself and your animals. You will need a truck, a trailer and camping equipment. You must provide your own feed but there will be places where you can purchase supplies.  Most camp sites have water for your animals, but not all.  You should be able to carry a two day supply of water for your animals.  You should bring water for yourself.
How does it work?
Each morning you will saddle (or harness) up and tie your horse or leave it in the care of a friend or fellow participant. Following our bus, you will drive your truck and trailer ahead to the next campsite. Our bus will bring you back to your horse or wagon.  You then ride forward to the next campsite.  You do not have to ride with one big group.  You are free to go at your own pace. Walk/trot/canter. Just use trail etiquette when passing other horses. Drag riders bring up the rear so no one is left behind. But, we ask that you keep moving along so drag is not waiting too long for folks to get into camp.

What type of support do we have?

The ride is fully supported with a large bus & small vehicle with portable restrooms aka the “coyote lounge”. Volunteers that are familiar with the trail are on site to help or assist with anyone new or that needs extra assistance. We pride ourselves on being like a large family. Welcoming to all!

What about food?
This ride has evolved the past few years into an all inclusive ride. Nightly meals & a couple breakfasts are a mixed combination of food trucks, local clubs, & community groups. We found this to work wonderfully as we can now guarantee support of each location that we travel thru. It has been a very successful partnership for everybody involved. There are a few evenings where you are on your own in towns with multiple restaurants. This allows folks to choose their own option for that evening.

* 2024 final meal itinerary TBD prior to ride.
